(ANSA) - Cosenza, March 4 - The suspected murderer of a Calabrian priest had tried to blackmail him by threatening to spread false rumours they were having an affair, police said Tuesday. Father Lazzaro Longobardi was found with a bashed-in skull and an iron bar under his body Sunday.

The Romanian suspect had stolen offertory money from Father Longobardi's house, police said.

The priest asked for the money back, saying that otherwise he would bar him from the parish, they said.
