Left, right politicians working to make prostitution legal (ANSA) - Rome, March 4 - Senator Maria Spilabotte of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) on Tuesday presented a draft law - also endorsed by some on the centre-right - to make prostitution legal.

The measure, which is backed by members of her party as well as by centre-right Forza Italia (FI) deputy Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, would make prostitution legal under certain conditions.

To work legally, prostitutes would be required to work in licensed apartments, hold a professional identity card, a VAT tax registration number to pay taxes, and agree to regular medical checkups.

The draft measure presented Tuesday at a press conference is reportedly aimed at recognizing the rights of prostitutes while fighting abuse.
