High water no match for Mardi Gras in Venice (ANSA) - Venice, March 4 - Water levels peaked at 110 centimetres in Venice during high tide Tuesday, flooding parts of the historic city on the last day of Carnival celebrations.

Thousands of costumed merrymakers nevertheless attended the Carnival finale, or Mardi Gras, as only 12% of the city centre was flooded.

Acqua alta, or high water, in Venice frequently occurs in spring and autumn where strong winds coupled with high tides raise water levels contributing to flooding.
