UNESCO warns Pompeii 'may collapse entirely'

Calls for extraordinary measures after walls crumble

UNESCO warns Pompeii 'may collapse entirely' (see related) (ANSA) - Naples, March 3 - The head of Italy's national UNESCO commission on Monday warned that "Pompeii was destined to collapse entirely" without extraordinary measures. "We need a plan of action to ensure security in the entire area. Without strong drainage for rainwater, it is clear that Pompeii is destined to collapse entirely," said Giovanni Puglisi.

Heavy rain was blamed for a wall of a Roman-era shop collapsing in Pompeii on Monday, a day after two other sites at the ancient city suffered serious damage from inclement weather.
