Great Beauty win 'fantastic' says culture minister
Oscar 'well deserved' says Franceschini03 March, 16:56
(ANSA) - Rome, March 3 - Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini on Monday said the foreign-language Oscar for Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty was "fantastic news". The new culture minister said: "It's a beautiful film and wonderful acknowledgment that is well deserved".
Franceschini added that he congratulated Sorrentino immediately after the Neapolitan director received the famous gold statuette, commenting that "the win proves that if Italy believes in itself and invests in its extraordinary combination of creativity, intelligence, beauty, art, history and culture, it can win any challenge it faces".
The Oscar win rekindled demands that Matteo Renzi's government reverse recent budget cuts to cultural spending, amounting to nearly 100 million euro for 2014-2016. Franceschini reassured journalists of the country's investment in culture, stating "it is necessary to invest and believe in culture, and the government feels that investment will be its main challenge".
