Government aware of Ukraine crisis, Napolitano says (see related) (ANSA) - Rome, March 3 - The Italian government is carefully monitoring the situation in Ukraine, President Giorgio Napolitano said on Monday. "I think the cabinet has a position which is highly aware of all the aspects and risks involved in the situation," Napolitano said. Earlier Monday Premier Matteo Renzi said Italy and Europe will leave "no stone unturned" in diplomatic efforts.

Moscow is now de facto in control of the Crimea region despite Western opposition in what is fast becoming one of the biggest confrontations between Russia and the West since the Cold War.

The position expressed by the Italian government on the Ukrainian crisis "has found important points of convergence at a European level, in particular with the German position," Napolitano added.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday urged world leaders through a spokesperson to work for a political solution to the crisis and defended Russia's membership of the G8.
