Italy's youngest premier was seeking a confidence vote from the Senate for his new government, which faces a struggling economy now pulling itself out of its worst recession since the Second World War. Renzi said new policies are essential to deal with high unemployment that is "merciless and devastating" to Italians.

He said that he and his new Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan will act fast on economic reforms.
