The conversation was "warm" and reaffirmed the friendship between the two countries, the statement said.

"In reaffirming the profound and lasting ties between Italy and the United States, President Obama expressed his appreciation for the reform agenda of (Premier) Renzi, with particular emphasis on the common goal of promoting growth and job creation". During their telephone conversation, Obama also praised Italy for its contribution to international military operations in such hot spots as Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria.

Obama was one of the first among world leaders to congratulate Renzi on Saturday after his swearing-in.

Renzi, Italy's youngest premier at 39, is expected to pass confidence tests on Monday and Tuesday nights.
