Pope appeals for peace in Ukraine (ANSA) - Vatican City, February 21 - Pope Francis on Friday appealed for peace in Ukraine where more than 100 people have died in clashes this week between pro-EU protesters and police. Francis called for "a swift halt to all violent action and the re-establishment of harmony and peace".

The EU and Ukraine are set to sign an accord aimed at ending the violence which began when President Viktor Yanukovych rejected a pending EU pact in favour of a Russian bailout in November.

The clashes peaked in Kiev this week, prompting the EU to step in to avert what many officials called a looming civil war.
