Mercury reaches record high for February night in Rome (ANSA) - Rome, February 19 - The temperature in Rome Tuesday night hit a new high in 232 years of record keeping.

The mercury lowered to a minimum of 17.1C, or 12 degrees higher than the average minimum temperature for February 16 over the last 10 years. "It is exceptional because it is also the highest temperature of the entire winter, considering that in the third week of February the last record was February 25, 1978 with 15 degrees," said Franca Mangianti, the president of the Bernacca Association, which oversees the Osservatorio Meteorologico del Collegio Romano (Roman College Meteorological Observatory), which has been recording temperatures in Rome since 1782. Mangianti added that Tuesday night's temperature is typical of the month of June.

The last record minimum temperature for February 16 in Rome was 14.5C reached in 1925.
