'Ukraine risk of civil war on EU border' says Bonino (ANSA) - Rome, February 19 - Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino on Wednesday said recent escalating clashes in Ukraine that have left at least 26 dead raised "the concrete risk of a civil war at the gates of the European Union".

"The gravity of the ongoing clashes in Kiev put the Ukrainian people in front of a dramatic situation, unacceptable violence that we as Europeans condemn with extreme firmness," she said.

"It is with the utmost concern that the concrete risk of a civil war at the gates of the European Union must be considered, and averted".

She said the EU should not ruled out "exceptional measures" to try to stop the violence, including sanctions. Ukrainian police on Wednesday launched a new attack on protesters in Kiev as President Viktor Yanukovych blamed opposition leaders for the worst violence in months.

This week's clashes have left at least 16 protesters and 10 police dead.

Italy takes up the EU's rotating presidency on July 1.
