Pope to retain Vatican passport, Church officials clarify (ANSA) - Vatican City, February 18 - Pope Francis has retained his Vatican passport, Church officials clarified Tuesday after it emerged the pontiff had applied to his native Argentina to renew his travel documents. "The pope wished to keep his Argentine documents, but that does not mean he is no longer Vatican City head of State," said Vatican Spokesman Father Federico Lombardi. "In fact, he cannot not have his Vatican documents". Argentina's Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo boasted Monday that the former archbishop of Buenos Aires had filed for a new Argentinian passport and identity card in order to "travel around the world as an Argentinian citizen". Once complete, his travel documents will be sent to Saint Martha's House, the Vatican dormitory where the pope has lived since being elected last March, and which he listed as his official residence in his renewal application.
