Ex-deputy mayor arrested, but not because of anonymous tip (updates previous) (ANSA) - Verona, February 17 - City prosecutor Mario Giulio Schinaia on Monday denied reports that an anonymous letter set off the investigation that led to the arrest earlier in the day of former deputy mayor Vito Giacino and his wife.

"We get tons of anonymous tips, and they are promptly trashed," Schinaia said. "In this case, we received several formal complaints and police reports as well as some anonymous tips".

The probe that began last summer led to a search of Giacino's and his wife's offices in November. They were remanded in custody on Monday on corruption charges.
