Believed to be hijacked by co-pilot, escorted to France

Ethiopian airliner intercepted by Italian fighter jets (ANSA) - Rome, February 17 - An Ethiopian Arilines airplane from Addis Ababa on Monday was intercepted by two Italian fighter jets in Sicilian airspace on Monday.

Bearing 200 passengers, the plane is believed to have been hijacked by the co-pilot in a bid to receive political asylum.

The Italian fighter jets escorted the plane to France, where it was taken over by French military aircraft.

The suspected hijacker expressed intent to land in Geneva, Switzerland, but has not shown any hostile intent.
