As national leader of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), Renzi will be consulted by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano regarding the formation of a new government after Premier Enrico Letta, also of the PD, stepped down on Friday.

Letta resigned after PD lawmakers responded Renzi's call for a new government on Thursday. Napolitano is expected to hand the mandate to form a government to Renzi.

This is "a delicate passage from the point of view of political institutions," said Renzi during a ceremony at city hall. "I would like to ask you, from the bottom of my heart, to give to the mayor, whatever his name will be, the same affection and the same critical sense that you have given me in recent years," Renzi said.
