Renzi says 'one of the best moments in 5 yrs'
PD leader tipped to take over as premier14 February, 12:42
(ANSA) - Florence, February 14 - "This is one of the best moments in five years around here," said Florence mayor and Democratic Party (PD) chief Matteo Renzi on Friday during a Florence ceremony for couples marking 50 years of marriage on Valentines Day.
After Renzi's party backed his call for a new government Thursday, Premier Enrico Letta, also of the centre-left PD, is set to resign Friday. Italian President Giorgio Napolitano is expected to hand a mandate to form a government to Renzi, the dynamic mayor of Florence who at 39 could become Italy's youngest premier.
Renzi and the couples exchanged "good luck" wishes. Renzi replied to one, "(Luck) is always needed, especially in this moment".
During his speech, journalists were fenced off, a precaution taken in the Florence city hall for the very first time since Renzi became mayor in 2009.
