Germany's Merkel watching Letta,Renzi with 'great attention' (See related) (ANSA) - Berlin, February 14 - Germany is following "with great attention" the political developments in Italy, as Premier Enrico Letta is poised to resign, a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday.

Merkel also hopes for a "quick" solution to the political situation, said spokesman Steffen Seibert.

He spoke as Letta was expected to tender his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano Friday afternoon after the premier's Democratic Party (PD) backed leader Matteo Renzi's call for a new government on Thursday, government sources said. Florence Mayor Renzi, 39, is a hot tip to receive a mandate from Napolitano to form a government, becoming Italy's youngest-ever premier.
