Hitchhiking fugitive picked up by plainclothes cop (ANSA) - Verona, February 13 - After nine months on the run from the law, a fugitive's luck ran out when he hitched a ride with a plainclothes Italian police officer near Verona.

The man, 37, has been wanted by authorities in Ferrara since May in connection with a range of crimes including aggravated theft, robbery, receiving stolen property and drunk driving.

The Carabinieri officer, who was not in uniform, reportedly thought something about the hitchhiker looked "wrong" and picked him up.

The police officer then pretended to drive the Romanian man home and it was only at the gates of the police barracks that the man realized police had caught him and unsuccessfully tried to escape again.

He now faces more than three years in prison.
