Alfano disapproves of Renzi govt, prefers elections (see previous) (ANSA) - Rome, February 13 - Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano on Thursday said he disapproved of a new government headed by Democratic Party (PD) leader Matteo Renzi and preferred new elections. The head of the New Center Right party was speaking after the center-left PD voted to oust Premier Enrico Letta in favor of a new government led by Renzi. Alfano said that if Renzi's executive "didn't offer political conditions to consider our positions, we will say no to the birth of a new government". He went on to say he preferred elections to President Giogio Napolitano handing Renzi a mandate to govern. "Either you're doing great things...or it's better to hold a vote," he said. "We're not in love with the idea of a legislature lasting until 2018," added Alfano. Renzi told PD bigwigs Italy needed a new government with a stronger reform agenda lasting to 2018.

President Giorgio Napolitano has called elections at this point in time "ludicrous".
