Letta wants to 'go forward'

Premier to hold press conference later Wednesday

Letta wants to 'go forward' (ANSA) - Rome, February 12 - Enrico Letta will tell journalists he wants his government to "go forward" at a press conference Wednesday, sources close to the Democratic Party (PD) premier said amid rising speculation he might be replaced by PD leader Matteo Renzi.

Renzi, elected in a landslide in December, has called a PD meeting Thursday to decide the fate of the left-right coalition, with the Italian media forecasting three possible outcomes: him taking the helm from Letta; a reshuffle to bring in Renzi-ite ministers; or snap elections.

Pundits say an election is unlikely until Italy gets a new electoral law, currently being debated in parliament on the basis of a deal between Renzi and centre-right leader Silvio Berlusconi.
