Coalition government seen as being on the brink

Letta, Renzi differences remain after crunch talks (see related story) (ANSA) - Rome, February 12 - Differences remained between Premier Enrico Letta and the leader of his centre-left Democratic Party (PD), Matteo Renzi, following talks Wednesday, government sources said. Renzi, who won a party leadership primary with a landslide in December, is questioning whether the PD should continue backing the coalition government, amid speculation he is set to take Letta's place. The PD will tackle the issue at a meeting Thursday. The sources said Letta and Renzi both stuck to their own positions at Wednesday's meeting.

Letta repelled pressure for him to throw in the towel on Tuesday, saying he would present a policy pact that would convince the parties supporting his government, including the PD.
