Italian bishops 'worried, not discouraged' by govt shakiness (ANSA) - Rome, February 12 - The secretary-general of the powerful Italian bishops' conference (CEI) told ANSA on Wednesday he was "worried but not discouraged" by the country's political instability. "I hope that those who are provoking or exploiting these uncertainties keep in mind there are real needs to consider.

With respect to the urgent needs of the people, other elements must not prevail," said Nunzio Galantino. Italian Premier Enrico Letta has been under pressure to step aside and let the head of his center-left Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, take his place. A crucial meeting is scheduled between the pair Thursday in which Renzi will decide whether to continue supporting the government or not.
