Francis says 'social crisis' around the globe demands compassion

Do not be indifferent to people hit by weather, says pope (ANSA) - Vatican City, February 12 - Pope Francis on Wednesday urged compassion and generosity towards victims of the extreme weather seen in Rome and other parts of Italy, as well as generosity in the face of a "social crisis" around the world.

During his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square, the pope noted the heavy and relentless rainfall that has damaged some people's homes, livelihoods, and threatened their well-being in the Italian capital as well as other parts of Europe.

The rain has created "so many social problems and done so much evil to entire neighbourhoods," said Francis, who spoke during a sunny day, a rarity of late. Similarly, he urged compassion for victims of a "social crisis" he said is being felt around the globe.

"I ask you, each of us must ask ourselves, how am I going to live with this? (The response is) I'm concerned, I want to help, to get closer, to pray for (victims)," he said.
