Italians own more vehicles than in most other countries (See related) (ANSA) - Rome, February 11 - Italians love their cars, with one of the highest levels of ownership in the world at 62 cars per 100 inhabitants in 2012, national statistics agency Istat said Tuesday.

That was also the second-highest among the 27 member states of the European Union, added the agency in a sweeping report on life in Italy.

The figures suggests a relatively high standard of living in Italy to allow such strong levels of car ownership, added Istat.

But the downside is traffic congestion due to relatively high density of vehicles, it added.

Vehicle ownership levels in Italy have increased from about 501 cars per thousand inhabitants in 1991 to about 621 in 2012, said Istat.
