Italian MPs to write EU counterparts on marines case (see related) (ANSA) - Rome, February 11 - The chairs of Italy's Lower House foreign affairs and defense committees said Tuesday they plan to write their counterparts in all the EU member States and the European Parliament in a bid to drum up international support for two Italian marines accused of murder in India.

Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone are awaiting indictments in the shooting deaths of Valentine (aka Gelastine) and Ajesh Binki, two Indian fishermen, in February 2012. They opened fire on their fishing trawler, alleging they mistook it for a pirate vessel, while guarding the privately owned Italian-flagged oil-tanker MT Enrica Lexie off the coast of Kerala.

India has been mulling whether to charge them under an anti-terrorism law, sparking an international outcry including from the EU. Italy has petitioned India's Supreme Court and the UN in a bid to have its marines returned, and has also threatened to freeze bilateral treaty negotiations with India unless the case is speedily resolved.
