Mother of recaptured convict says breakout was a 'protest' (ANSA) - Busto Arsizio, February 10 - The mother of a convict who was sprung from prison by his brothers and recaptured over the weekend told a court Monday they never meant to hurt anyone, calling the breakout an act of protest. "They were demonstrating against his life sentence," said Maria Antonietta Lantone. Domenico Cutrì, who was captured in northern Italy between Saturday and Sunday amid a nationwide manhunt, was serving life imprisonment for ordering a hit on a Polish man who had bothered his girlfriend. Two of his brothers were among a group of gunmen who freed him a week ago during a transfer from prison to court. One of them, Antonio Cutrì, was killed in the ensuing shootout with guards, some of whom were injured. Before he died, the gang dropped him off with his mother, who brought him to the hospital. The other brother, Daniele Cutrì, was captured Friday. In the days leading up to her escaped son's arrest, she insisted on his innocense and told him to evade capture. "Your brother sacrificed himself for you. Do not turn yourself in," she said. His lawyer on Monday told the court Cutrì was "very scared" and was being "subjected to tight security measures".
