18-year-old dies from complications of neglected toothache

Dentists say fasciitis on the rise in Italy due to self-neglect

18-year-old dies from complications of neglected toothache (ANSA) - Palermo, February 10 - An 18-year-old in the Sicilian capital Palermo died in a hospital last week after letting a toothache go untreated.

Gaetana Priola did not go to a dentist to treat her toothache because she reportedly couldn't afford it. The disease became deadly when it spread to her lungs.

The hospital said the cause of death was "pulmonary septic shock".

The young woman was taken to the hospital after fainting at home. She was placed in an intensive care unit in critical condition.

Dentists report that fasciitis - an infection of soft tissues and a possible complication of untreated abscesses - is on the rise in Italy because people are not maintaining themselves as they once did, and have reduced dental visits.
