Two kidnapped Italian workers freed in Libya (ANSA) - Rome, February 7 - Two Italian construction workers kidnapped in Libya last month have been freed, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said Friday with "great joy and satisfaction". In a statement, the foreign ministry added that Francesco Scalise and Luciano Gallo, taken hostage in an area beyond Libyan authorities' control, were rescued in an operation "thanks to collaboration between Libyan and Italian authorities".

The two were taken hostage in Derna, Cyrenaica, several weeks ago. Their families had been asked by the foreign ministry to refrain from commenting on the situation for security reasons. Anti-Italian sentiment has been on the rise in the former colony during Fascism. The Italian cemetery in Tripoli was attacked twice last month, leaving one guard dead and several graves damaged.
