Boldrini blames threats on 'overheated' politics (ANSA) - Rome, February 7 - House Speaker Laura Boldrini on Friday blamed an "overheated" political climate for recent threats against her that included a bullet in the mail. "I hope that everyone knows how to moderate their tone in politics, which doesn't have to lead to conflict, but civil debate," she said. Long the target of political attacks from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S), Boldrini has recently been subjected to increased verbal abuse on the Internet. The Facebook page of M5S leader Beppe Grillo was lit up over the weekend with sexist and vulgar slurs against the leftist Speaker, some of which imagined her being raped. Last week the floor of the House was the scene of pushing and shoving, sparked in part by Boldrini using her powers to shut down an M5S filibuster. Police are currently investigating who mailed her an envelope with a bullet inside, which was intercepted at a post office on Wednesday. "It's truly disturbing," said Boldrini.
