'No risk of govt with Berlusconi' says Renzi

Electoral law will produce clear winner says PD leader

'No risk of govt with Berlusconi' says Renzi (see previous).

(ANSA) - Rome, February 7 - Democratic Party (PD) leader Matteo Renzi said Friday there was "no risk" the centre-left PD would end up ruling with centre-right leader Silvio Berlusconi again if the next general election produces an inconclusive result like last year's.

"We don't risk (that)," tweeted Renzi, who noted he recently forged a deal with Berlusconi on a new electoral law geared to produce a clear winner.

The law, which sets bars for small parties to force them into alliances and a 15% winner's bonus for a coalition that gets 37%, is expected to be approved by the end of the month. The PD teamed up in an unnatural alliance with Berlusconi to break two months of post-election stalemate last April before the shaky coalition imploded when the media magnate pulled his support after the Senate voted to expel him on a tax-fraud conviction.

The PD has since been ruling with the New Centre Right while the bulk of Berlusconi MPs have moved into opposition under the revived Forza Italia banner.
