"Maybe I was wrong to turn to the M5S with tones of understanding," Renzi said, in discussing the political chaos that has erupted over the past few weeks in parliament. He described followers of M5S leader Beppe Grillo, an avid blogger and former comedian, as "political prisoners," who need to be freed.

The M5S has contributed to a vicious and unproductive climate in parliament, a sort of "anti-politics," he added. The rising tensions in parliament have been due to significant new reforms, Renzi said.
