Politics 'about experience, not succession', says eldest son

Pier Silvio Berlusconi rules out political career (ANSA) - Milan, February 6 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's eldest son Pier Silvio on Thursday ruled out the possibility of following in his father's footsteps by standing for political office, at least for the time being.

"Politics is not a question of succession but of experience and competence," the 45-year-old deputy chairman of Berlusconi's Mediaset empire said.

Pier Silvio Berlusconi added that he "did not think" any member of the family would announce their candidacy in the near future.

"If at all, it will happen many years from now, with the necessary experience," he concluded.

Last autumn Berlusconi's first-born Marina denied rumours that she might stand for the leadership of the centre-right after the supreme court upheld a tax-fraud conviction against her father, making it definitive.

The Senate subsequently voted to eject Berlusconi from parliament.

But the dominant figure of Italian politics of the last two decades remains at the helm of his resuscitated centre-right Forza Italia party.
