Bullet mailed to House Speaker, blocked at post office
'Violent atmosphere leading to foolish acts' says PD06 February, 14:20
The concealed .38-caliber round was intercepted by postal workers outside Milan. Long the target of political attacks from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S), Boldrini has recently been subjected to increased verbal abuse on the Internet. The Facebook page of M5S leader Beppe Grillo was lit up over the weekend with sexist and vulgar slurs against the leftist Speaker, some of which imagined her being raped. Last week the floor of the House was the scene of pushing and shoving, sparked in part by Boldrini using her powers to shut down an M5S filibuster. "It's clear that the crescendo of violent tones in recent days is spewing venom that could lead to foolish incensed gestures," said Andrea Martella, deputy whip of the center-left Democratic Party. "Everyone's sense of (democratic) responsibility must prevail".
