Vatican Secretary of State says Holy See to work with UN (see related) (ANSA) - Rome, February 5 - The Vatican will issue a thoughtful response after careful review of a United Nations report that condemned the Catholic Church's handling of a worldwide sexual abuse scandal, the Holy See's Secretary of State Pietro Parolin said Wednesday.

Parolin, who will be elevated to cardinal later this month, said that the Vatican is willing to cooperate with the UN Committee on the Rights of Child, which issued the report earlier in the day.

"There will be an articulate response," Parolin said from Marghera, near Venice. "For our part, we must reiterate our willingness to (cooperate) with the committee and the Convention (on the Rights of the Child)," to which the Holy See is a party, added Parolin.

Like other Vatican commentators, he said he was "surprised" that the report touched on other issues, such as homosexuality and abortion, which the UN committee said were related to the well-being of families and children.

Parolin called that interference with Catholic doctrine, especially on the issue of abortion.
