Holy See accuses UN of 'attempting to interfere with Church' (see related) (ANSA) - Vatican City, February 5 - The Holy See on Wednesday accused a United Nations report on protecting children of "attempting to interfere with Catholic Church teaching" on some points, with regard to "the exercise of religious freedom".

The report issued Wednesday by the Committee on the Rights of the Child said that the Vatican had adopted policies that allowed clergymen to sexually abuse thousands of children over decades, and urged it to review its veto of abortions that save mothers' lives and to establish "the number of children born to Catholic priests" in order to protect them", among other recommendations. In its response, The Holy See reiterated "its commitment to defending and protecting the rights of the child" and vowed to "study and examine" the report in full.
