Nationwide manhunt for runaway inmate (ANSA) - Rome, February 4 - Italian police were engaged in a nationwide manhunt Tuesday for Domenico Cutri', an inmate who was freed on Monday in an attack on a prison van that was taking him to trial.

The 30-year-old brother of the inmate, Antonino, died of his wounds in hospital after being hit in a shoot-out with prison guards. He was taken to hospital by his mother. Two police officers were injured.

Police, who on Tuesday found the stolen Citroen C3 car used by the gang to escape, are also looking for two or three other men who took part in the attack as well as Domenico Cutri'. Cutri', from Inveruno near Milan, was convicted on appeal in December 2012 of planning the murder of Luckasz Kobrzeniecki, shot to death outside his house at Trecate near Novara on June 15, 2006. Cutrì decided to murder Kobrzeniecki because he was bothering his girlfriend. Cutrì drove the car from which Manuel Martelli, 32, from Trecarte, shot Kobrzeniecki. Martelli got 16 years and four months in an unappealable fast-track trial. A bar owner in Trecate, Luca Greco, also from Inveruno, got three years for aiding and abetting.
