Says comparisons between Italian and EU studies unfounded

EC commissioner says Italian corruption not half of EU total (ANSA) - Brussels, February 3 - The European commissioner for home affairs on Monday said corruption estimates made by the European Commission and those made by the Audit Court in Italy could not be compared. The EU Anti-Corruption Report, released Monday, found corruption costs the European economy about 120 billion euros per year.

The Italian Audit Court recently found that corruption costs Italy roughly 60 billion euros per year.

Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said one cannot infer that Italy represents nearly half of Europe's total corruption, since the two studies were based on different parameters and could not be compared to each other.
