Landslide engulfs Rome huts

Torrential rain leads to 'hill collapse'

31 January, 12:29
Landslide engulfs Rome huts (ANSA) - Rome, January 31 - A landslide in Rome Friday sent a wall of rain-soaked earth and mud hurtling down to engulf huts inhabited by poor people and immigrants not far from the Vatican. Police are looking for injured victims after neighbours heard screams.

Most of a hill in the Aurelio district, a suburb between the Vatican and Rome city limits, sheared off and collapsed onto the small shanty-town, many of whose inhabitants are believed to be Roma.

Rome has been one of the cities worst hit by a wave of torrential rain.
