Italian bishops appeal to pope over Episcopal Conference

More influence requested over appointment of head

Italian bishops appeal to pope over Episcopal Conference (ANSA) - Rome, January 31 - A group of Italian bishops on Friday asked Pope Francis to give them more influence in selecting the head of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) in the future.

"The appointment of the president of the CEI should still be responsibility of the Pope", the Italian bishops association's general secretary Monsignor Nunzio Galantino said, adding, however, that they should be tasked with coming up with a group "of fifteen names" from which the pontiff should chose from when making his appointment. This would guarantee the Italian bishops more involvement in the future of the body, Galantino said.
