Letta tells European leaders Italy ready for presidency (ANSA) - Brussels, January 29 - Italy has achieved greater stability and has demonstrated its ability to assume the duty presidency of the European Union later this year, Premier Enrico Letta said Wednesday.

He spoke after meetings with the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, and the President of the European José Manuel Barroso in Brussels. "Italy will prove it knows how to be a good leader in the EU, but to do this we must have our own accounts in order, have stability, and have resolved or be resolving infringements of European legislation," said Letta.

He later spoke to Italian Members of the European Parliament to tell them about his discussions on Italy's duty presidency of the EU in the last six months of this year, as well as preparations for Milan Expo 2015.
