Italy's House Speaker breaks filibuster, first time ever
Ends M5S rally to block 100-billion-euro central bank gold sale29 January, 19:59
(ANSA) - Rome, January 29 - Italy's House Speaker on Wednesday interrupted a filibuster using her so-called "guillotine" powers for the first time in history, sending a decree to a vote that passed.
The vote concerned a government decree to sell off 100 billion euros of central bank gold and had been held up for days by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement in effort to time it out.
The M5S has accused Speaker Laura Boldrini of violating the Constitution by allegedly taking orders directly from Premier Enrico Letta, both of whom are in the center-left Democratic Party (PD).
