'Organic' grain fraud of 120 mn euros leads to nine arrests (ANSA) - Pesaro, January 29 - Police in the Adriatic coastal town of Pesaro on Wednesday arrested nine people for international racketeering and business fraud in the organic food sector. The suspects are accused of falsely selling 350,000 tons of grain as "organic" in European markets worth a total of 120 million euros.

Investigators claim that the suspects' grain sometimes contained genetically modified varieties (GMOs) or even contaminated products. Finance police seized 35 million euros in assets and 35 people have been placed under investigation. The scheme was allegedly headed by an elderly man, more than 70 years of age, from the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.

Investigators dubbed him "Master Yoda" after the character in the Star Wars movie series.
