Skier taken for dead survives avalanche in central Italy (updates previous) (ANSA) - Rome, January 28 - A man survived an avalanche in central Italy Tuesday after being taken for dead. The 32-year-old, his brother and a companion were swept away while skiing off piste in the central Italian region of Abruzzo when they were swallowed by a wave of snow in Campo Imperatore, the largest plateau of the Apennine ridge.

Doctors said he was taken to intensive care in a state of cardiac arrest and serious hypothermia.

First-responders originally told the media he had died.
