Italian consumer confidence rises (ANSA) - Rome, January 28 - Consumer confidence in Italy rose this month, national statistics agency Istat said on Monday.

Istat said its consumer-confidence index climbed to 98 points in January from 96.4 in December.

Consumer confidence has seesawed in recent months as the country seeks to emerge from its longest recession since World War II. Gross domestics product was flat in the third quarter of last year after eight consecutive quarters of negative growth and was forecast to return to positive growth in the last three months of 2013.

Consumer confidence is important because people tend to spend less if they are pessimistic about the economic climate.
