European markets rally on rise in US consumer confidence

European markets rally on rise in US consumer confidence (ANSA) - Rome, January 28 - European stock markets gained momentum Tuesday after Wall Street opened positive on news the US consumer confidence index jumped to a five-month high of 80.7 points this month from a December reading of 77.5.

In Milan, the FTSE-Mib index gained 0.91% to close at 19,448 points. Shares in Silvio Berlusconi's broadcaster Mediaset jumped 6.29% to 3.85 euros a share after Deutsche Bank analysts raised their price target from 4.5 to 5 euros on positive earnings forecasts.

In Paris, the CAC-40 index rose by 0.89% to close at 4,185.29 points. The Frankurt DAX index added 0.62% to end the trading day at 9.406,91 points, while London's FTSE-100 index gained 0.33% to close at 6,572.33 points. Madrid followed suit, with the IBEX-35 index rising 1.24% to close at 9,879.10 points.

Athens bucked the trend as its ATHEX listing shed 1.94% to close at 1.136,97 points.
