1.5 kg of marijuana found on southern Italian beach (ANSA) - Maruggio, January 27 - One and a half kilos of marijuana wrapped in cellophane were found on a southern Italian beach and seized by paramilitary Carabinieri police, investigators said on Monday.

The package discovered at Campomarino di Maruggia, on the heel of Italy's boot-shaped peninsula southeast of Taranto, is the fourth load found in less than a month in the town.

On Thursday, police found 25 packs for a total weight of about 83 kilos hidden inside a big bag lying along the shore.

On January 6, police found another 21 packs weighing a total of 43 kilos among the rocks on the shore of the same town.

One week later, two off-duty finance police officers on a fishing expedition came across another 34 kilos of marijuana on the same beach.

The total black market value for the 161.5 kilos of marijuana found in recent weeks could be worth more than $1.8 million, or 1.4 million euros, based on the Italian price of $11.3 per gram reported on the website Havocscope, based on United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's World Drug Report.
