Over 22,000 tourism and retail businesses lost last year (ANSA) - Rome, January 24 - Some 22,616 companies operating in the retail and tourism sectors in Italy closed down last year, commerce association Confesercenti said Friday.

According to their report, Italy is the only large EU nation not to benefit from a fledgling economic recovery in their sector. Only sales generated in market stalls and not in shops have posted gains. In fact, the total number of registered street vendors in Italy grew to 3,334, and the number of e-commerce sites jumped by 530 units last year. Fashion companies suffered with a net loss of 5,994 units.
