Telecom regulator orders end to racism on airwaves (ANSA) - Rome, January 23 - Italian telecommunications regulator Agcom on Thursday called on the media to eliminate any racist discrimination that takes place on both public and private television and radio.

Agcom President Angelo Marcello Cardani called for an end to "phenomena of discrimination based on ethnic and cultural diversity," in a letter sent to all television and radio stations in the country. It was seen as a lightly veiled response to racist comments against Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge, Italy's first black cabinet member, from the anti-immigrant Northern League, whose media outlets include television channel Tele Padania and radio station Radio Padania.
