Pope warns of idle chatter rooted in envy (ANSA) - Vatican City, January 23 - Pope Francis on Thursday warned against the destructive power of idle chatter, jealousy and envy, calling them "the weapon of the devil".

In his homily at a Vatican guesthouse where he has been living since his election to replace Benedict XVI last spring, he invited Christians "to shut the door to jealousy, envy and idle chatter" that "destroy our communities".

"Idle chatter conceals jealousy and envy and it divides community, it destroys community. It is the weapon of the devil," he concluded.
