Concordia bridge tampered with, says Schettino lawyer

Cruise ship boarded for first time since righted

Concordia bridge tampered with, says Schettino lawyer (see related) (ANSA) - Giglio Island, January 23 - Lawyers for the captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship when it sunk two years ago said Thursday that the bridge area has been altered, damaging potentially crucial evidence supporting his defence at the site of the wreckage. "People have been working here," said attorney Domenico Pepe of the bridge command center, where the course was set leading the Concordia to crash on rocks and kill 32 people off the Tuscan island of Giglio, with Francesco Schettino in command.

"The scene is no longer as it was, there's been a complete modification of the state of things". "Maybe work was done here by people who had no interest in clarifying things...Now nothing is traceable to the real conditions at the moment the ship sank". A group of technical experts, judges and lawyers boarded the Costa Concordia to provide evidence for the trial of Schettino, who faces charges of multiple manslaughter and dereliction of duty. It is the first time the Concordia has been boarded since the successful outcome of a parbuckling operation in September to raise it from its semi-submerged perch off Giglio.
